Yes I am a Christian woman and raging feminist.
Upon having a look at my blog my friend Motlalepule had a couple of questions for me, she was mainly interested in how it is possible for me to be a born again Christian woman and a raging feminist at the same time. In the midst of our conversation I realised that in her mind feminism meant direct disrespect and hate towards men, I took time to explain to her what feminism means or atleast what it means to me. For those of you who don’t know, Feminism is:
The advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.
First of all I believe in the Lord almighty and I believe that all human beings are equally important to God, there is not one sex more important than the other. Women and men are different, women can never be like men and men can never be like women, we are designed that way by God and our differences are what actually make this world work, the one sex cannot exist without the other.
The role of a husband and a wife in a household are different but these roles are equal to one another. Feminists do not desire to be like males (We are fine as females, thanks) but we do go against misogynists who want to make the existence of women seem trivial. All of us would not exist if it had not been for Eve, how then are women not important?
Women deserve equal opportunities in education and in the work place, I will never stop believing in that, I don’t think God wants me to stop believing in that. Eve was taken out of Adams rib to be his helper, not to be controlled, disrespected, denied opportunities, physically abused, emotionally abused, stifled and beaten by Adam.
I will not deny that there are people in some churches who have used the Bible as means to oppress women, I will never blame the actions of evil people on the Bible, I have since realised how easy it is to misinterpret the Bible if one reads it without actually being led by the Holy spirit.
In conclusion, I will continue to believe and fight for equal rights for women, I will continue to speak against a society that wants to objectify us and make us seem like creatures of lesser importance. Nowhere in the Bible does it say women must just stand there and wait for orders from men, we are not porcelain dolls.
